I couldn't wait to review this toy because I've never had such an opinion on a purchase before. Santa brought this to my 8 year old and she has loved it. It goes everywhere with her and provides lots of entertainment. BUT......I just can't wait for it to break or get lost because the content of it is so disappointing. The characters speak rudely, there is too much focus on appearance (including very skimpy clothing) and especially on dating and breaking up. My daughter doesn't understand why the game's mom and dad are mad all the time, why she is grounded, and why there is so much breaking up and going out. It is a toy marketed for her age, but definitely much more grown up in content, and not the kind of teen I want her to grow up to be! So, if you are just looking for a fun toy and don't care about emphasizing morals or values, then this is the toy for you!
Both of our daughters have one. This game teaches kids the important parts of life; hygiene, getting plenty of sleep, going to school on time, eating enough, chatting with friends, taking care of their pet, and staying healthy.
The instruction book with this game doesn't go into too much detail, but half the fun in this game is figuring out how to solve problems, speaking with people you meet in the game to find food, learning how to keep your health bars up.
We get about 12 hours of play per set of batteries, which isn't too bad. The reviewers that had their games blink black probably had weak batteries, the game does that when the batteries are even slightly weak.
This is a well-made game, durable and nicely sized.
Our daughters (ages 6 and 8) love their My Life games, and unlike mindless shooting or arcade games, this game teaches them about maintaining themselves and maintaining healthy relationships in a fun and engaging way.
To be warned though, unless your child has a lot of patience, you will need to help them through difficulties. And for the first few times playing it, your character will end up in the hospital one too many times and you won't be able to afford medicine to get out. At this point you'll need to reset the game by turning it off, holding down all three buttons on the front while turning it on again.
Finally, read the instruction book. If you are looking for a toy that you can just hand to your kid without any kind of parental guidance, this is not it. If you are willing to spend some time with your child and learn the game play, then you will find this game incredibly rewarding. I would give if five stars if I had the option.
